Nordic Food Alert Workshop

On October 8-9, 2024, in Stockholm, Sweden, food systems experts from government, industry, academia, and civil society gathered to assess the Nordic region’s resilience to food supply disruptions. Participants took part in a tailor-made policy simulation, addressing plausible climate and geopolitical crises scenarios impacting the region’s food security. The simulation built on the Karlstad Declaration and emphasized the need for systematic resilience planning to safeguard food security across the Nordic region.

Working in small groups, participants developed policy options, ranging from immediate responses to long-term solutions, to address plausible, research-based crisis scenarios for the Nordic food systems. They then presented their proposals to senior officials, including representatives of the Swedish Food Agency and the Swedish Ministry of Rural Affairs

The resulting discussions explored ideas such as new regional mechanisms for innovation and preparedness, protecting vulnerable consumers and producers, and building cross-regional support networks. These proposals reflect a holistic, multi-level approach aimed at guiding policymakers and stakeholders at regional, national, and local levels across the Nordic countries.

Acknowledgments

The Food Alert initiative benefits from earlier work done in the context of the CASCADES, EU Horizon 2020 project, which explored cascading climate impacts on various aspects of European societies.

The workshop was also enhanced by Listening Inspires, an NGO that brings together a rich network of individuals committed to inspiring creative solutions to modern-day challenges through deep listening – to ourselves, each other and Nature.

The Nordic Food Alert Workshop was made possible by the sponsorship, funding and leadership of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Special thanks are due to Secretariat staff members Katja Svensson and Jonathan Eng for their strong support, as well as the ‘Technical Working Group’ participants who contributed their time and expertise to ensure the scenario’s accuracy and relevance.
